Congressman Neguse Secures Committee Markup for His Bill to Install Women's Suffrage Statue

Congressman Joe Neguse has secured a committee markup for his bill to install the first national outdoor monument honoring the women's suffrage movement in Washington D.C. Neguse first introduced H.R. 473 in January with the aim of installing Loveland artist Jane DeDecker's Every Word We Utter statue depicting Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, Alice Paul, and Ida B. Wells and secured a hearing for the legislation in May.

"The women behind the 19th amendment were American heroes, and they deserve to have their bravery, resilience, and resolve recognized," said Congressman Joe Neguse. "I am incredibly grateful to my colleagues and constituents for their support in moving this bill forward and feel honored to be spearheading this important effort to install the first-ever outdoor monument to honor the women's suffrage movement."

Today at 8:00am MT/10 am ET, the House Natural Resources Committee will consider the legislation. If passed, the bill will move to the House floor for a full vote.

This is Congressman Neguse's second piece of public lands legislation to be marked up in the Natural Resources Committee, following the Colorado Outdoor Recreation and Economy Act that passed a markup vote in June.

H.R. 473 was considered before the Natural Resources Committee on May 22nd. Companion legislation sponsored by Colorado Senators Michael Bennet and Cory Gardner was heard before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee in June.
